How to Clean the Microwave
If your microwave does not have any of that dreaded stuck on hard splatter that drives people to the brink of buying a new microwave, then count your blessings. You will be able to keep it clean by using the method below.
If your microwave does have that dreaded mess in it, then never fear because help is available. No, you do not have to pay an arm and a leg. Very little elbow grease is even involved. But you will need a few supplies and a little time. Throw in a little effort and the result will be one sparkling clean microwave. It will even smell better.
Please be aware that the microwave, water, bowl, and dish cloth will become hot. Use caution in handling these items. Stand away from the door when opening it, unless of course you want to give yourself a facial at the same time. I do not recommend considering combining the facial with the cleaning.
Items needed
- microwavable bowl
- 16-20 ounces of water
- a couple ounces of lemon juice concentrate
- dish cloth
- rinse water
Process:
- Pour water and a few ounces of lemon juice concentrate into the microwavable bowl.
- Place bowl in microwave.
- Run microwave for five to ten minutes.
- Using caution due to heat, remove bowl from the microwave, put aside in case process needs to be repeated.
- Wipe down entire microwave with wet cloth until clean. This may require several rinses.
If the microwave does not come clean after completing the first attempt, return the bowl to the microwave and repeat steps 3-5 until the microwave is clean. Sure it takes a little time, but you can be doing something else while the microwave is steaming the gunk away.

What’s the lemon juice for?
We usually do this with just water, and run for no more than 5 minutes. Make sure to put a wooden chopstick or something similar in the water to keep it from overboiling.
Works great on all gunky microwave problems.
Lemon Juice is a natural bleach. In this case, I use it to help remove smells from the microwave. We cook a LOT of pasta with tomato sauces. When these are warmed up or when canned pasta is heated in the microwave, then the mess seems to be worse. So I add lemon juice.
I have never tried it with just water that I can recall at the moment. I will have to try that if I get another “gift” from the boys by their not wiping out the microwave. Although I try to wipe it out at least once a day, sometimes I do tend to try to delegate that task to the boys. They just don’t seem to get it that when I say go do the dishes that I also mean to do the dishes, wipe down the counters and stove, and microwave. I need to learn to stop and take the time to communicate better what I want. They only do what I say.
